Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll
The 9th Earl of Argyll, Archibald Campbell, played an important roll in the history of Kintyre. As was customary amongst the Scottish nobility of his era, Archibald was fostered by one of his father's kinsmen, Colin Campbell of Glenorchy, and was raised speaking both English and Scottish Gaelic. A staunch and avid Protestant, he was imprisoned after refusing to fully comply with the Scottish Test Act, but managed to escape imprisonment with the assistance of his stepdaughter. After eventually escaping to Holland, the Earl returned in May 1685, with a small force of 300 men in an effort to spark a national uprising. After suffering several misfortunes, the Earl was captured by the authorities and sentenced to death. He was executed on 30 June 1685 in Edinburgh and was eventually succeeded by his son, Archibald Campbell, the 1st Duke of Argyll.

The Kintyre peninsula lies on the western seaboard of mainland Scotland in the Argyll and Bute council area. The peninsula is roughly 30 miles (50 km) long and between 2 to 11 miles (1 to 18 km) wide. The peninsula has been continually inhabited since the Neolithic era by a number of different ethnic and cultural groups.
